  1. A story lots of people should read. Unless we’ve walked in the shoes of folks who differ from ourselves, we can’t completely know their experience. It’s just too easy to have opinions on things we don’t even know.

  2. Very moved by this account and grateful to your friend for allowing you to share his story. And what an experience to work with Gendlin! His work in Focusing has greatly impacted my own therapy. He is an incredible practitioner with a fantastic mind and understanding of the human condition.

  3. What a beautiful story of someone who walked into his truth. Such an interesting question to pose whether he would have done that at a younger age if guided by someone else. Thanks for the inspiration about living life with no secrets, Dr. Stein!

    • Well, Wynne, that aren’t many who can arrive in a chosen world without secrets when you began early to encounter the necessity to keep yourself hidden. I should add that Rick’s activism in getting the Costa Rican to live up to its promises to the ill and dying leaves me speechless. Nor does he publicise his humanitarian efforts, he simply performs them. As you say, he is an inspiration.

  4. Thanks for sharing Richard Stern’s story. I’m happy that he has found peace with his gay identity. I’ve had four close gay friends. Two are no longer with us. They were/are people with generous hearts and open minds.

  5. I wonder if your own mind changed on the question of acceptance over the course of your life. Either way, your embrace of humanity makes you the admirable person you are.

    • Most likely, Dr. Stein. Some years after leaving the convent, I became close to two gay Guyanese men who were friends of my husband. I made two more (closeted) gay friends in Brazil who were very supportive when my ex abandoned us.
